THe MAPS ARE of the ggs collection are Now available for use at Concordia University Library.

The map collection of GGS is now available for use by members.  It is housed on the first level of the library in the Reference section. The maps are housed in two containers.  One a flat file located next to the copy/printer machines to right of the reference desk and around the corner.  The maps are in the bottom two drawers (5 and 6) of the flat file. The second container is a box, located in the same area as the flat file, directly across on the counter.  Each has its own map index which is currently available on this “Library page”.  The hard copy index at Concordia has not yet been updated.  There are road maps, boundary maps, maps of Europe, Canada and the some states.  There are maps from different periods in history showing boundaries of the time. The maps hold a lot of visual information and we hope you will find them useful.  The organizing, indexing and labeling was done by Theresa and Mary.  A grateful thank you to them, for all their efforts, allowing us to once again use our maps collection.

BOOKS OF INTEREST

Title: Kreis Bischofsteinitz in Ansichtkarten (The District of  Bischofsteinitz in Picture Postcards)

Author: Rudolf Kiefner
Call Number:R943.703 K542k 1981

Summary:   This book is a collection of postcards depicting about 60 villages in the district of Bischofsteinitz. Bishofsteinitz is located in the current Czech Republic, near the border with Bavaria. Prior to WWII, it was part of the Sudetenland or German speaking section of Czechoslovakia. A brief summary of the 20th century history of the Sudeten regions is contained in the Vorwort (Forward) section of the book. The author and his family were expelled from the region along with other German speaking Czechs following WWII. An alphabetical list of the villages pictured in the book is contained on page 7. The pages on which pictures of the village can be found are listed following the name of each village. Only the German names of towns are listed (villages generally reverted to or took a Czech name after WWII). Maps are included on the inside covers of the book. Of interest to genealogists is that - where known - the author includes who sent the postcard, to whom it was sent, the date of the postmark, and background or history of the location pictured. Names of owners of inns and manor houses are also included.
